Diabetes is more than a blood glucose number

Good diabetes care brings together glucose patterns, medicines, insulin needs, food, activity, complications and any other hormone conditions. A specialist assessment pulls these into one plan that fits your life.

Conditions treated

What Dr. Santosha treats

Specialist assessment for common, difficult-to-control and complex diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes

Insulin doses, glucose patterns, low-sugar prevention and long-term care.

  • Type 2 diabetes

Individualised treatment and a medicine review when glucose is not at target.

  • Diabetes in pregnancy

Endocrine care for gestational diabetes, coordinated with your obstetrician.

  • Type 2 diabetes remission

An honest assessment of whether sustained remission is realistic for you.

  • High HbA1c

Finding out why HbA1c stays above target despite treatment.

  • Glucose fluctuations

Making sense of recurrent highs, lows and unpredictable readings.

  • Hypoglycaemia

Evaluation of recurrent or unexplained low sugars, including medicine-related episodes.

  • Diabetes with complications

Endocrine input when diabetes occurs with kidney, heart, nerve or other complications.

Type 2 diabetes remission

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed?

In some people with type 2 diabetes, blood glucose returns to the non-diabetic range and diabetes medicines are no longer needed. Doctors call this remission rather than a cure, because the tendency to diabetes can return. Whether it is realistic for you depends on how long you have had diabetes, how severe it is, your weight and metabolic health, and your treatment history.

Reversal vs remission

Understanding type 2 diabetes remission

“Diabetes reversal” is the phrase most people search for. Remission is the precise medical term for type 2 diabetes that is no longer in the diabetic range without glucose-lowering medicines.

  • Remission is possible for some

It is achievable for some people with type 2 diabetes, but not something to assume for everyone.

  • Remission is not a cure

Glucose can improve a lot while the underlying tendency remains, so monitoring continues.

  • Weight loss can help

Meaningful, sustained weight loss improves glucose metabolism and helps some people reach remission.

  • Assessment is individual

Your diabetes history, metabolic health and response to treatment decide what is possible.

Remission questions

Questions about reversing type 2 diabetes

Who should consider a remission assessment?

Anyone with type 2 diabetes who wants to know whether remission is a realistic goal.

The assessment looks at how long you have had diabetes, your glucose and HbA1c history, weight and metabolic health, current medicines and how you have responded to treatment.

The goal is not simply to stop medicines. It is safe, sustained improvement in metabolic health with appropriate monitoring.

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed permanently?

“Permanent reversal” is not how doctors describe it. Some people achieve remission, but follow-up matters because diabetes can return.

Can I reverse type 2 diabetes without medication?

Some people reach remission without glucose-lowering medicines, but never stop or reduce medicines without a medical review.

Can weight loss reverse type 2 diabetes?

Significant, sustained weight loss improves insulin sensitivity and glucose control, and can lead to remission in selected people.

Can early type 2 diabetes go into remission?

Acting early may improve the chance of remission, but suitability has to be assessed individually.

Can I stop my medicines if my sugars become normal?

Normal readings alone do not mean medicines should stop. Changes should be made with proper monitoring.

Is diabetes reversal the same as remission?

“Reversal” is everyday language. “Remission” is the medical term for sustained normal glucose without glucose-lowering medicines.

When to book

Signs it's time to see a specialist

A specialist review is especially useful when diabetes is hard to control or the plan needs rethinking.

  • HbA1c stays high

Glucose remains above target despite medicines and lifestyle changes.

  • Frequent low sugars

Hypoglycaemia that is unexpected, severe or disrupting daily life.

  • Large glucose swings

Readings repeatedly swing between high and low.

  • Unsure about the diagnosis

It is unclear which type of diabetes you have or which treatment fits.

  • Several medicines, little effect

Glucose stays uncontrolled on combination treatment.

  • Diabetes with other hormone problems

Diabetes alongside thyroid disease, obesity, PCOS or other conditions.

Specialist care

Why see an endocrinologist for diabetes?

Diabetes is a core part of endocrinology, the specialty concerned with hormones and metabolism.

A DrNB-trained endocrinologist manages diabetes together with the other hormone and metabolic conditions that change how it should be treated.

Dr. Santosha Mantha sees adults, children and adolescents with diabetes.
